Tree-Free Arbor Day Free Tree Giveaway for Education

“Each generation takes the Earth as trustees.” – J. Sterling Morton

With all that we are seeing and learning regarding a rapidly changing society, technology, and world, it is imperative that we expose children to the most resilient and powerful technology throughout all of history – nature. While the media and corporate America are in a frenzy to embrace the Green wave, and Earth Day gains increasing exposure every year, the Arbor Day Foundation has understood and stressed the value of trees for 137 years. In fact, April 22 was chosen to designate Earth Day because Sterling Morton’s first tree planting day was held on that date, when over a million trees were planted across the state of Nebraska - in one day!

The growing need to connect children with nature has been affirmed by Richard Louv’s top selling Last Child in the Woods, and the call to action has begun all across America. The only hope we have to create future stewards of the planet is to ignite curiosity and awe about the natural world within all children. This passion will not happen online, through a webcast, or in a traditional classroom. It must be accomplished in nature, by nature, for nature.

Eden’s Envy Landscaping loves, respects, and values trees and nature as much as Morton did, and we want to share our enthusiasm with local children. Have your students research Arbor Day, Morton, and the amazing benefits that trees provide all living creatures. Challenge them to compose an essay of several paragraphs explaining what they discovered, and submit it at out website. If possible, send along photos of where the tree will be planted and any other relevant details.

In the third week of April, we will select the most compelling essay from each eligible county, Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Indiana, and contact the winning schools. After arranging details, we will deliver an 8 foot tall Pin Oak and assist the students in planting it. We will also have Arbor Day and other natural play activities, and will take photos to post on our website & blog.

To learn more and to have your students submit their essays.
Home school students are also eligible, and the essay deadline
is Friday, April 17th. Essay winners will be contacted on
Monday, April 20th. No paper mail entries please – keep it tree free!
